Apart from track racing, the BMW M3 E30 competed in rally races, primarily in national championships, but also in the World Rally Championship from 1987 to 1989. The E30 was successful on asphalt thanks to its four-wheel drive, but it struggled on uneven surfaces, even when the rally version was rear-wheel drive. Over 100 E30 M3s were manufactured specifically for road racing and rallying, out of a total of 21,222 made. Early 1992 marked the end of production for the E30 M3.
